How the Scoring Works

Each vest is checked against 40 binary criteria. It either meets one or it does not. There is no weighting, no partial credit and no score adjusted after the fact to make a ranking come out a particular way.

A criterion we could not confirm on the manufacturer's own page is marked as not met. That is deliberate and it is harsh on purpose: a specification a brand does not publish is a specification a buyer cannot rely on. It is why REP, 5.11, Condor and Bear KompleX all score zero or one on Capacity despite making perfectly good vests. They publish plate dimensions instead of a weight rating.

The six groups

Thirteen criteria reward loading and capacity. Fifteen punish anything heavy, rigid or bulky. That balance is why the winner does not sweep: the Kensui EZ-VEST MAX takes 13 of 13 on loading and capacity and only 11 of 15 on training use and comfort, where the Rogue Echo takes 15 of 15.

Tier bands

Raw score out of 40. S is 34 and above, A is 26 to 33, B is 23 to 25, C is 20 to 22, D is 17 to 19, E is 14 to 16, F is anything below 14.

Checking the Result

Three things are worth checking yourself before you trust any ranking, including this one:

Products and Sources

Verified on each manufacturer's own product page on August 5, 2026. Where a page rendered inconsistent figures, the live product data was used rather than the marketing copy.

What was left off, and why

Six budget vests sold mainly through Amazon and Walmart were researched and then dropped: CROSS101, RUNmax, ZELUS, Henkelion, Yes4All and Prodigen. Their listed prices move daily and could not be tied to a stable first-party source, so scoring them against fixed price criteria would have been guesswork presented as data.

MiR's Pro Plus was dropped for the same reason. No first-party page states its price or its capacity, and the 140 lb figure quoted by third-party listings could not be confirmed anywhere MiR controls.

Prices are US list or current sale as shown on manufacturer sites in August 2026. Product names and specifications belong to their respective manufacturers. Durability complaints are quoted from public customer reviews on those manufacturers' own listings.

The Vest That Scored Highest

34 of 40 criteria. The only vest here that loads with plates you already own, adjusts in 2.5 lb steps, and carries 300 lb.
