The reader we scored for is a home gym owner who already owns plates and wants a usable pair of dumbbells without buying a second set of plates. That choice is the single biggest driver of this board and it is stated rather than hidden. It is why plate compatibility carries seven criteria, why bare handle weight is scored at all, and why capacity is capped at 150 lb per handle instead of rewarding a 400 lb rating nobody presses on a dumbbell.
A different reader gets a different board. Score for maximum load and best grip surface alone and Titan and Bells of Steel finish on top, because they publish more, cut a real knurl and fit a rotating sleeve. Both readings are in the table below. Nothing is hidden to make the ranking come out a particular way.
Conservative marking. Anything a manufacturer did not state in August 2026 is scored as a cross, not assumed. That cuts against every product here at least once, the Kensui entry included: it publishes no grip diameter, and its public rating of 4.49 does not reach the 4.5 threshold.
Price is one criterion, not three. An earlier draft of this comparison awarded separate marks for being under $250, under $150 and under $75 per pair, which handed cheap products a three-mark head start on price alone. It is now a single mark.
PRx is in stock. An earlier version of this comparison listed the PRx Loadable Dumbbell Handle as sold out. It is not. It is live at $68.99 single and $104.99 a pair, and it is ranked here.
The knurling column was wrong in both directions. Gungnir was marked as having no knurl when its own spec table reads "Knurl: Med". CAP and Yes4All were marked as knurled when both ship rubber or textured chrome grips by their own descriptions. Every knurl mark here comes from the maker's own wording.
Three Kensui SKUs were ranked in the original top three. Two of them, the PRO Bundle and the MAX, cannot currently be bought. The bundle is out of the ranking entirely and the MAX is scored with its buyability failures counted against it.
Not purchasable in the US on 11 August 2026: the Kensui AdaptaBELL PRO Bundle and the Centering Adapter in every pack size, Eisenlink Quick-Lock, and the Eleiko loadable dumbbell, which is quote-gated with no published US price and runs around $740 a pair through resellers.
Delisted or unreachable: Black Widow thick grip (site not resolving), EliteFTS Olympic fat bar dumbbell handle, Micro Gainz and Fringe Sport loadable handles.
Not a loadable handle: REP Fitness sells the selectorized REP x Pépin FAST, not a plate-loaded handle. PowerBlock, Bowflex SelectTech, NÜOBELL, MX Select and Flybird are selectorized and are a different product category. DÜMBBELL Pépin's through-bolt series is a genuinely different architecture worth reading about, but its US pricing is quoted in Canadian dollars with parts of the range on pre-order, so it is not ranked.
Prices are US, per pair, captured 11 August 2026. Rogue, Titan's 36in, and Intek sell per handle, so the pair price is shown with the per-handle price beside it. Gungnir is priced in Norwegian kroner and converted, and US buyers pay import duty on top. Product names, images and trademarks belong to their respective owners.
