How the Scoring Works

Each product gets one mark per criterion it meets. There is no weighting and no partial credit. A criterion is either met or it is not, and the total is a straight count out of 34.

That design has a deliberate consequence worth stating plainly: the checklist rewards published, checkable facts and punishes silence. A manufacturer that does not publish a load rating scores zero on the capacity criteria even if the product is strong. Fringe Sport finished last among the wood rings largely for this reason, not because the rings are poor.

Where the criteria came from

The five groups map to the failure modes that actually show up in owner reports, rather than to spec-sheet vanity numbers:

• Grip and Material. Wood grips harder as hands sweat. Plastic gets slicker the moment moisture appears. This is a functional difference, not a cosmetic one.
• Strap System. The ring almost never breaks. The strap and buckle are what fail, and they carry the most weight here.
• Capability. What the product can actually train, including the above-anchor work that separates rings from fixed-handle suspension trainers.
• Portability and Setup. What the product needs from the room around it. The most common regret in this category is having nowhere to hang the thing.
• Trust and Support. What happens after the money leaves your account.

Two criteria that need explaining

"Both thicknesses in a single product" is not a claim that one grip size beats another. 28mm is the gymnastics competition standard and suits pulling. 32mm is the thicker CrossFit standard and suits pushing. That is a fit decision, not a quality one. The criterion marks whether the buyer has to commit to an answer at purchase.

"Capacity described as tested, not merely rated" exists because capacity claims in this category are unregulated marketing. Published figures range from 440 lb to 2,000 lb, and the highest numbers tend to belong to the cheapest products. A brand that says its figure was tested is making a stronger claim than one that simply prints a number.

Checking the Result

The honest way to read this matrix is to disagree with it. Weight the criteria differently and you get a different winner, and the marks above are published precisely so you can do that.

Some worked examples. Care only about wood quality and country of manufacture, and Rogue moves up sharply. Train in an apartment with a single anchor point, and every ring on the board becomes irrelevant next to TRX. Need something that lives outdoors year round, and the plastic sets stop being the false economy they otherwise are.

Prices, ratings and review counts were captured on 5 August 2026 from the sources listed below. Ratings move. Prices move faster. Where a manufacturer publishes no rating at all, the row says so rather than importing a number from a third-party roundup.

Products and Sources

Three products were researched and then cut: Nayoya and Elite Sportz are unavailable on Amazon US, and Emerge has been delisted entirely. WOD Nation, which appears in several published roundups, does not make gymnastics rings at all. A ranking that recommends gear nobody can buy is worse than no ranking.

The Ring That Scored Highest

Kensui DUO-Rings finished on 27 of 34, four marks clear of PULLUP & DIP Premium on 23. It is the only product on the board carrying both grip standards on one ring, and it takes the full eight marks in Trust and Support minus one, losing only the multi-year warranty criterion.

It does not sweep the board. It publishes no inner ring diameter, states no warranty length, ships no door anchor, and cannot live outdoors. Those four crosses are in the matrix above like everything else.
